In breve: Negli anni 1930, la signora Erlynne (Helen Hunt) scappa dal suo passato e dai debiti lasciando New York e trasferendosi in Italia, ad Amalfi, confidando sul suo fascino seduttivo per iniziare una nuova vita. Ad Amalfi, la donna incontra una giovane coppia, Meg (Scarlett Johansson) e Robert Windermere (Mark Umbers). Mentre Robert cerca di riportare la signora Erlynne nella società rispettabile, la loro amicizia viene scambiata per una relazione adultera, alimentando i pettegolezzi della gente. Nel frattempo, la signora Erlynne riceve proposte amorose da Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson)…
